Week 1
The first week started very hot with no pronounced wind direction. Hunting was very tough as the deer just would not move very far in daylight hours. We finally moved right next to bedding areas, close to water and Joe and Roger shot great deer on night three. The final day of the hunt brought a huge change with 40 mph winds and heavy rain. Little did we know this would be the start of the monsoon season!
Week 2
The second week started the way the first week ended, 40 mph winds and lots of rain. Hunting again was very frustrating, but the hunters were very supportive realizing there is nothing that can be done with nasty weather. The second night Mike had a 10 pointer stand beside the blind for a long time but would not show itself enough for him to make a good shot. The third night Bren shot a very nice deer (his first with archery equipment) that gave everyone a big lift. The final night the wind went down and the deer movement was much better. Luke shot a big 8 point with very little time remaining. We hope the weather is better next week.
Week 3
Week three the wind blew every day and the rain never stopped. Our friends from 'Livin' the Hunt' TV Show were with us and this week proved to be the toughest week of all. On day three, Shane shot a very nice 10 pointer. Dave and Mary hunted Ducks and geese all week with lots of birds.
Trevor had a good 10 point by his tree stand for a long time on the last night but just would not give him the right angle for an ethical shot so he did not shoot. They got good film footage, but no deer. Be sure to watch their show on the Pursuit Channel starting in July.
Week 4
Week Four brought a big change. The rain stopped and the snow began. We received five inches of snow before the wild bunch from Texas arrived. Getting around started to get to be a real problem as the ground is so wet we were getting stuck. The prairie trails are so rutted up and slippery they were almost impassable. Denise shot a good buck on the second night, Troy shot a great buck on night three and John shot his buck on the fourth night. It seemed as though the deer finally had to move despite the ugly weather. We actually saw the sun on the final day and hoped that signaled a weather change
Week 5
Week five was a little closer to normal than the previous four weeks. We still had light rain and snow most of the week but the wind was not near as strong. Carly and Joel from Delta Waterfowl hunted with us for a couple of days and the waterfowl gods shined on us with some awesome bird hunting. Vicki shot her deer the first night, a good ten point. John could only hunt 2 days as he was needed back at work. Ralph shot his deer on night three, a seven by six! He was a real unique deer. Tom wouldn't get his deer until the final night, but what a deer it was. No rain or snow the last day, maybe things will dry out.
Week 6
The final week was just a continuation of the wet weather we had experienced all season. Light rain on the first night didn't stop Mike from shooting a real nice buck right away. The second day brought more light rain with snow, but Frell shot a great ten point despite the weather. We shot ducks and geese in the morning. Third day was so wet we couldn't get out to shoot birds, bow hunters saw good movement but no shots. Day four bird hunters shot nine geese and Brad shot a very nice ten point. Trey saw a big deer, but just didn't quite get close enough for a bow shot.
2009 proved to be our most challenging year to date because of all the weather created problem. Many mornings we couldn't hunt waterfowl as field conditions were so wet we could not get to the field. Again our hunters understood that weather is out of our control and we would all have to make the best of what was available.
